Hi guys, Just want to know what some of you think about torrents, I torrent alotta of the shows here on Crunchyroll for viewing on my media center, but at the same time I pay for the Membership so I am supporting the licensors, i am just curious if this is a grey area or is it wrong?

I think it's technically illegal, but DL'ing is kinda treated as a grey area. That said, I do DL quite a lot of shows, but I also by a lot of anime on DVD. My justification is this: you wouldn't buy a car, clothes, electronics, etc with out trying them out would you? I know that doesn't make it right, but whatever....

That is somehow a gray area.

But for US licensed anime, I buy the DVD or other format. That since I am kind of a collector. Good to those arranged in my library. Nothing beats a collection of anime in physical media like DVD, VCD, etc. And those collectors box and medias with prints makes those worth buying even with comparison to licensed download version, a.k.a. digital version. I don't like licensed digital version of anime.

For American movies and series, I use torrent to check if those are worth buying the DVD media or other medium as a collection.

My reasoning is the same as Impala1's justification.

Is it legal to download a torrent of an anime that Crunchyroll hosts?

I don't know how you guys could justify stealing. That's what you're doing; you're stealing. Just admit you're wrong.

With that being said, humans have done wrong throughout history. The temptation to get for free what you could pay for is too much sometimes. On top of that, you know you won't get in any trouble for torrenting anime from fansubbing sites or piratebay and the like. And that's natural ,you're a human. If you know you can do something wrong and not get in any sort of trouble, you may feel more inclined to do so since there's less risk.

The only justification I can think of is that we are human. Just look at America, the wealthiest country in the world, founded of thievery and lies.

I'm getting off topic. You're wrong for stealing anime.

Technically, its wrong, and illegal in most countries. However, the laws are there in most places around the world as a deterrant. The internet is too large and vast to enforce such laws effectively. They take it very seriously in such places like Japan, because the industry itself is part of their culture. And likewise, in the states, we have massive media conglomerates, ala movie companies and music labels, that lobby for higher laws and enforcement. But in the end, its practically futile and cost to much money to do. Its a personal preferance to understand what your doing is wrong and do it anyway. If you find a dollar bill on the street and pick it up, did you steal it from the person that dropped it? The most common rationalization is that its not reaallyy stealing, since the liscencors will never now its gone. Thats the catch with digital media.

Ive never downloaded anime, but I have streamed select shows from other sites If Ive heard that they were good. Maybe a half dozen or so to date Ive stremed from fansubbing sites. As someone that knows thats technically the wrong thing to do, I find ways to make up for it I guess. I subscribe to several legit streaming sites and I buy dvd/bd collections. Thats the best I can do for myself. Its a choice everyone makes on their own and for their own reasons.

it depends how you look at it whether it is wrong or not because companies with the help of governments decided that if you buy something like that you are not allowed to share it, but is that wrong itself?

Wrong? Pretty much yes. But in some countries (like mine, the fact that anime so underground it's almost taboo, you really have no options. And Crunchyroll's anime list for South America isn't the best... I find it pretty lacking.

Even in a lawless world, stealing is wrong to me. You can try and use prettier words like sharing if you want, but all torrentersare really doing is taking someones hard work, the work they do for a living, and giving it out for free.

You can try to prove me wrong, or you can try to be sarcastic and witty.

The world is grey, but stealing is stealing in this case.
